The UK and Ireland Fuel Distributors Association and OFTEC are urging home heating oil users to take action now to prepare for the winter months. As part of their “Be Winter Wise” campaign, they have released a five-point plan offering essential advice to help households across the UK and Ireland manage their heating oil systems efficiently throughout the colder season.
This campaign provides valuable guidance to off-the-gas grid households, covering everything from system maintenance tips and practical ordering advice to locating local distributors and ensuring protection for older or vulnerable individuals in rural communities during the cold weather. The five-point plan also highlights the latest resources available to those needing assistance with home heating, including information on winter financial support options offered by governments across the UK.

Ken Cronin, CEO of UKIFDA, emphasised the importance of early action, stating: “Following our five-point plan will help to ensure your home is all set for winter heating. With the cost-of-living pressures continuing, avoiding any kind of financial uncertainty is crucial. Take action, be prepared, and most importantly, place your heating oil order in plenty of time as our distributors continue to navigate these geopolitically challenging times, which can place pressure on the market.”
From a technical standpoint, OFTEC chief executive Paul Rose advised: “Prevention is better than cure. If you haven’t booked your annual service with an OFTEC-registered technician, we highly recommend you do. Regular maintenance keeps your heating system efficient and helps to prevent breakdowns and the risk of costly emergency call-outs.” He added that OFTEC-registered servicing businesses undergo regular inspections and adhere to industry-approved standards to ensure systems are properly maintained.
UKIFDA further recommends that homeowners contact their local distributors early for the best pricing and payment options, encouraging everyone to take proactive steps in preparing for winter.
