Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has authorised TEPSA Tarragona to import animal bi-products to produce biofuels into the Port of Tarragona in Spain.

To qualify for the authorisation, TEPSA had to show that it had the appropriate infrastructure for the storage, inspection and traceability of the products, as the ministry needs to ensure the integrity of the goods.

TEPSA general manager Nuria Blasco said: “The authorisation is great news for TEPSA Rubis Terminals, the port and for the Mediterranean arc.”

The authorisation allows TEPSA to import liquid animal bi-products from outside the EU directly through the Dependent Inspection Centre attached to the Border Control Point of Tarragona at the port itself, “making things simpler” it said.

Previously, such products could only be imported via a series of bureaucratic procedures. TEPSA Tarragona is the first terminal on Spain’s Mediterranean coast to receive the authorisation and only the second in Spain overall.
