German energy group RWE AG will build a terminal in Brunsbuettel near Hamburg to handle the import of about 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year from as early as 2026 with a plan to raise the capacity to 2 million tonnes in the future.

The green ammonia imported through the terminal will be distributed to industrial customers, RWE said on Friday. In a further step, a large-scale cracker will be built at the site to produce green hydrogen that will be supplied to customers through a pipeline.

Investments in the initiative are estimated in the mid-three-digit million-euro range.

The project lays the ground for the creation of green import infrastructure that should play a major role in facilitating the import of the green fuel to Germany. Brunsbuettel’s location on the mouth of the Elbe River offers great conditions for such an initiative as it provides access to both the North Sea and the Baltic Sea and is connected to European inland waterways.

The Essen-based group calls for pragmatic action, swift planning and approval processes as well as short construction timelines in order to enable to rapid building of the infrastructure.

The ammonia terminal will be built near the first LNG terminal in Germany in which RWE is also involved. Earlier this month, German development bank KfW acting on behalf of the federal government, RWE and Dutch natural gas infrastructure and transportation company Gasunie signed a memorandum of understanding to build an LNG terminal in Brunsbuettel as gas is considered a transitional fuel in Germany’s struggle to cut reliance on Russian imports.
