Quantem, Australia and New Zealand’s leading independent bulk liquid storage and handling company, has successfully completed a substantial project to add 90,000 cubic metres of diesel storage capacity at its Pelican Point Terminal in Adelaide. The $52 million development more than doubles the company’s diesel storage capacity at the facility, providing enhanced fuel security to support critical transport and infrastructure requirements.
Project Details and Timeline
The expansion project, which commenced in July 2023, involved the design and construction of three 30,000 cubic metre diesel storage tanks along with associated supporting infrastructure. The development was completed on schedule and within budget, representing a significant investment in South Australia’s fuel storage capabilities.

Engineering and construction company Saunders International was appointed to handle the design and construction of the storage tanks, delivering the infrastructure to meet stringent industry standards for fuel storage and handling operations.
Strategic Importance
The additional storage capacity addresses growing concerns about fuel security amid global uncertainty affecting supply chains. The expanded facility provides a significant boost to South Australian industries, particularly transport, agriculture, and mining sectors that depend heavily on diesel for their operations.
The project forms part of broader efforts to enhance Australia’s domestic fuel resilience, ensuring adequate storage capacity to meet critical infrastructure and economic requirements during potential supply disruptions.
Executive Commentary
Quantem Chief Executive Officer Nick Moen described the project as a significant milestone in enhancing Australia’s domestic fuel security. He emphasised diesel’s critical role in the nation’s fuel and infrastructure requirements, noting that the increased storage capacity is fundamental to strengthening energy security.
Moen highlighted the project’s exemplary safety record, reporting no medical treatment injuries or lost time injuries throughout the construction period. He attributed this achievement to the focus and dedication of the entire project team.
Government Support
The project received co-funding through the Federal Department of Industry’s Boosting Australia’s Diesel Storage Program, reflecting government recognition of the strategic importance of enhanced fuel storage capacity. This support underscores the alignment between private sector investment and national energy security objectives.
The completion of the Pelican Point expansion reinforces Quantem’s position as a key player in Australia’s fuel storage infrastructure, providing essential capacity to support economic activity across multiple sectors whilst contributing to national energy resilience.
