Power2X and Advario have announced a partnership to develop a world-scale production and storage hub for sustainable aviation fuel and synthetic, ultra-low carbon fuels at the Port of Rotterdam. This project is set to be the largest e-SAF facility announced to date, with an annual production capacity exceeding 250,000 tonnes. The synthetic fuel, derived from green hydrogen, will power approximately 7,000 transatlantic flights between Amsterdam and New York each year, contributing significantly to the aviation industry’s decarbonisation efforts.
The facility will use green methanol as its primary feedstock, sourced from renewable hydrogen and biogenic carbon. This methanol will be imported from regions rich in renewable energy resources, complementing locally produced green hydrogen. To support the supply chain, Advario will build a 230,000-cubic-meter storage and logistics facility, complete with marine and rail capabilities, ensuring seamless transportation of the green molecules.

Located at the strategically important Port of Rotterdam, the hub provides direct access to European airports, notably Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, enhancing the distribution of sustainable aviation fuels across Europe.
Advario’s acquisition of the 26-hectare Aluchemie site in April 2023 has paved the way for the transformation of the location into a hub for new energy solutions. With waterfront access and close proximity to hydrogen infrastructure, the site is perfectly positioned to play a pivotal role in Europe’s decarbonisation efforts.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel is critical for reducing carbon emissions, offering a 90 percent reduction in lifecycle CO₂ emissions compared to conventional jet fuels. Under Europe’s ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, the increased use of SAF, including e-SAF, is mandated from 2030 onwards. The new hub will meet 40 percent of the required e-SAF volume when it comes online around the end of the decade, making it a cornerstone in the continent’s energy transition.
Occo Roelofsen, founder and CEO of Power2X, emphasised the importance of the project, stating: “This project underscores our commitment to developing the next generation of energy infrastructure and accelerating the energy transition. It places us at the forefront of decarbonisation and delivers sustainable solutions for the future.”
Bas Verkooijen, CEO of Advario, added, “This partnership with Power2X exemplifies Advario’s strategy to lead in the energy transition. We are proud to provide the essential storage and logistics infrastructure for the world-scale e-SAF facility.”
Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, remarked: “Rotterdam currently supplies 24 percent of Europe’s aviation fuel needs, and with the EU’s target for 20 percent of aviation fuel to be renewable, the production of e-SAF in Rotterdam is vital for meeting future demand. The Power2X and Advario project is a perfect example of repurposing land for green, sustainable production.”
The collaboration between Power2X and Advario marks a significant advancement in Europe’s journey toward sustainable energy and reaffirms Rotterdam’s status as a leading hub for the production and distribution of renewable aviation fuels.
