The Easington Gas Terminal in East Yorkshire, UK was shut down on October 19 after a methanol leak was discovered. Fire crews and emergency services attended the scene after the liquid leak was discovered at around 11:00 local time at Centrica’s plant at the site.
The Easington Gas Terminal is one of the UK’s six main gas terminals and is located on the North Sea coast near the village of Easington. The site consists of four plants: two operated by Perenco, one by Centrica and one by Gassco.
A spokesperson for Centrica told the press that all staff at the site were safe and well. The leak was stopped and fire crews attended the scene as a precaution, the spokesperson added. A number of firefighters remained at the scene until the afternoon, the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said. The emergency services response was in line with standard safety measures at the Easington site, Centrica said.
Centrica has said that an investigation into the incident will begin immediately and the cause of the liquid methane leak will need to be understood before production can resume.
Gas flows to the Easington site through the Langelad pipeline, which is operated by Norwegian company Gassco. The pipeline operator said that the leak was relatively small and that the pipeline was unaffected by the outage. Around 74 million cubic metres of gas flows through the Langelad pipeline.
