European terminal company Alkion Terminals has opened a new tank pit at Alkion Terminal Le Havre (ATLH) in France.

The new tankpit replaces some of the capacity lost following the closure of Alkion’s Sotrasol terminal (ATSOT), also in Le Havre, in June 2021. The decision to close the site was taken in 2015, after the Le Havre Port Authority published new plans for the port. The closure would have negatively affected the Sotrasol terminal’s customers’ supply chains, but the new tankpit ensures the continuity of these supply chains. It is also much more energy efficient than ATSOT.

Tankpit 22 has 24 tanks with a total capacity of 33,000 m3, designed to store high-value heated products such as additives and lubricants. The tanks are insulated and heated, and the smaller size of the tanks is designed to provide flexibility for customers. The tanks have dedicated pipeline infrastructure, and are connected to markets by water, rail and road.

“I believe we have demonstrated that our customers can trust Alkion to accompany them in securing their future business requirements. The new Tankpit 22 guarantees their supply chain, notably their import of feedstock, export of intermediates, and inland distribution to consumers. Our world-scale terminal in Le Havre is the gateway for chemicals, additives, and lubricants into France. The new tankpit has consolidated our position as a strategic partner, while triggering additional expansion projects,” said Alkion CEO Rutger van Thiel.
