Kulevi Oil Terminal in Georgia, owned by the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), has become the first terminal in the region to receive and load bitumen.

The terminal has recently completed a project to allow the handling of bitumen, which requires heating for discharge and loading. The terminal now has thermal oil heating boilers, dedicated pipelines, bitumen heating and discharge units and a bitumen loading pump station, all of which maintain bitumen at the necessary temperature for handling.

The discharge equipment has several heat exchangers to decrease the required heating time. The storage tanks have been fitted with immersion heaters and thermal oil heating coils.

The equipment was fully tested and commissioned prior to the first use, and the terminal says it is fully compliant with all applicable operational and safety standards. Terminal staff have all been fully trained to operate and maintain the equipment.

The terminal says that the new equipment will allow it to exceed its customers’ expectations and increase its competitiveness.
