UK chemical major Ineos has become the latest company to invest in green hydrogen – it will spend €2 million on electrolysis plants in Norway, Belgium and Germany in the next ten years.

This is the biggest investment in green hydrogen in Europe to date – further investment is planned in the UK and France. Ineos subsidiary Innovyn is already Europe’s largest electrolysis plant operator and has experience in storing and transporting hydrogen, so has the necessary expertise.

The first facility, a 20 MW electrolyser powered by green energy, will be built in Norway, and will reduce the carbon footprint of Ineos’ operations in Rafnes by 22,000 tpa. The project will provide hydrogen for the Norwegian transport sector. Ineos will also build a 100 million MW electrolyser at its site in Cologne, Germany, with the hydrogen used to product green ammonia. It will reduce carbon emissions by more than 120,000 tpa and will open opportunities to develop e-fuels through power-to-methanol technology on an industrial scale. Further facilities in Belgium and France are yet to be announced.

In the UK, Ineos will upgrade its existing low-carbon hydrogen production facilities in Runcorn to provide compressed, fuel-cell quality hydrogen to the transport and power generation sectors.

“Green hydrogen represents one of our best chances to create a more sustainable and low carbon world. Europe is crying out for more investment in green hydrogen and Ineos’ announcement today shows our determination to play a leading role in this important new fuel,” said Jim Ratcliffe, Ineos chairman.
