Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, part of the technology group Wärtsilä, has secured an order to supply Nordic energy company Gasum with biogas upgrading and liquefaction solutions for a new bioLNG plant. This state-of-the-art facility will convert agricultural and organic household waste into high-quality bioLNG, contributing significantly to the region’s renewable energy efforts. Wärtsilä recorded the order in the fourth quarter of 2024.
Once operational, the Wärtsilä technology will enable the production of 25 tonnes of bioLNG per day. The bioLNG production process involves purifying biogas to high-quality biomethane, which is then liquefied at a temperature of minus 160°C to form the final product.

“This new plant is an important part in fulfilling our ambitious goal of bringing 7 TWh worth of renewable gas annually to the Nordic market. We are happy to continue our cooperation with Wärtsilä in this second big greenfield biogas plant investment project in Sweden,” said Eero Lallukka, senior manager, procurement at Gasum.
Wärtsilä’s scope of supply for the project includes not only the biogas upgrading and liquefaction systems but also a 200-cubic-metre storage tank and an export and filling station. The delivery package has been designed with provisions for future expansion, including the installation of an additional liquefaction unit. The solution closely resembles the setup for Gasum’s plant in Götene, which Wärtsilä is currently delivering and expects to commence operation later this year.
“The decarbonisation of customer operations is at the front and centre of Wärtsilä’s strategy. Our biogas upgrading and liquefaction solutions are a central pillar of this commitment, and we are delighted to continue our support of Gasum,” commented Rolf Håkansson, sales manager Biogas, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions.
The new bioLNG plant is scheduled to begin commercial production in early 2026, marking another milestone in the push towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy landscape in the Nordic region.
