ConocoPhillips’ Surmont facility achieved a significant operational milestone on 24th June, marking the production of its 500 millionth barrel of oil since operations commenced.
The achievement was celebrated by ConocoPhillips Canada president Nick McKenna, who praised the accomplishment as remarkable. “Safely producing 500 million barrels from Surmont is an incredible accomplishment,” McKenna stated. “My deepest thanks to all involved throughout Surmont’s history and those working and supporting the asset today.”
Surmont Central Processing Facility 1
Located approximately 55 kilometres south of Fort McMurray, Alberta, the steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) facility specialises in producing Surmont Heavy Dilbit—bitumen that has been diluted with condensate to facilitate transportation and processing.
The facility operates through two central processing plants dedicated to the treatment and blending of bitumen. As a 100 per cent working interest asset, Surmont represents a significant component of ConocoPhillips’ Canadian operations, offering sustained production capabilities with an extended operational lifespan.
The milestone underscores the facility’s consistent performance and the effectiveness of SAGD technology in extracting oil from Alberta’s oil sands region.
