Hempel A/S has announced the appointment of Eric Alström as its new group president and chief executive officer, effective 1st August 2026. He succeeds Michael Hansen, who stepped down from the role and departed the company in June 2026.
Alström joins the global coatings company following an interim leadership period led by executive vice president and chief financial officer Peter la Cour Gormsen and executive vice president and chief technology officer Emilie Barriau, who jointly guided the business during the CEO transition.

Bringing more than three decades of international executive leadership experience, Alström has held senior roles across Europe, the United States, Japan, and China in the industrial technology, automotive, and manufacturing sectors. Throughout his career, he has built a reputation for driving business transformation, delivering profitable organic growth, and leading large global organisations.
Most recently, Alström served as president of Danfoss Power Solutions, where he was responsible for the company’s largest business division, overseeing global operations with annual revenues of approximately €5 billion. During his tenure, the business strengthened its market position through organic growth, strategic acquisitions, and a strong focus on customer solutions and product development.
Alström is also familiar with Hempel’s business, having previously served as vice chair of the company’s Board of Directors from 2017 to 2024. He holds a Master’s degree in Management from Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Richard Sand, chair of Hempel’s Board of Directors, said Alström’s extensive international leadership experience and proven track record in growth, innovation, and business transformation made him well suited to lead the company through its next phase of development. He also noted that Alström’s previous service on the Board provides valuable insight into Hempel’s business, strategy, and culture.
Commenting on his appointment, Alström said he was honoured to join Hempel and described the company as a global industry leader with a strong heritage, long-standing customer relationships, and ambitious growth plans. He said he looks forward to working with the Board and employees worldwide to build on the company’s foundation, accelerate innovation, create greater value for customers, and deliver profitable growth.
The Board also expressed its appreciation to Peter la Cour Gormsen and Emilie Barriau for their leadership during the interim period, recognising their role in ensuring business continuity and maintaining operational progress while the CEO succession process was completed.
