The Asia Natural Gas and Energy Association (ANGEA) has appointed Ryosuke Tsugaru, a highly experienced global LNG executive, as the organisation’s new chair. Tsugaru, who serves as JERA’s senior managing executive officer and chief low carbon fuel officer, officially commenced his two-year term on 2nd September.

Leadership Transition

The appointment follows the recent retirement of outgoing chair Bill Bullock from ConocoPhillips, who had served in the role for the past two years. Tsugaru has been a member of the ANGEA board since April 2024, bringing extensive experience from more than three decades in the global energy sector.

Executive Commentary

ANGEA chief executive Paul Everingham welcomed Tsugaru to the role whilst acknowledging the contributions of his predecessor. Everingham highlighted Tsugaru’s vast experience and expertise, noting that his leadership and insights into energy security and the energy transition would guide the organisation’s policy and advocacy work as well as its ongoing development.

The CEO expressed particular gratitude for Bullock’s guidance and support during his tenure, crediting his contributions to the significant growth and maturation of the association over the past two years.

Strategic Vision

Tsugaru expressed honour at accepting the chairmanship and enthusiasm for ANGEA’s work with governments, industries, and communities across Asia. He emphasised his commitment to building upon Bullock’s achievements whilst highlighting natural gas’s vital role in ensuring energy security and enabling what he described as a realistic, orderly transition to a lower-carbon future.

The new chair outlined his vision for supporting the region’s journey towards sustainable economic growth and a more resilient energy system through collaborative partnerships.

Board Composition

Margaret Rogacki, director of Australia LNG at ExxonMobil, will continue in her role as deputy board chair. Andy O’Brien, executive vice president for strategy and commercial and chief financial officer at ConocoPhillips, will succeed Bullock as the company’s representative on the ANGEA Board.

Organisational Focus

ANGEA serves as a key advocacy body for the natural gas and LNG industry across Asia, working to promote energy security and support the region’s energy transition objectives. The organisation engages with policymakers, industry stakeholders, and communities to advance the role of natural gas in Asia’s energy mix.

The leadership transition comes as the association continues to navigate complex energy policy discussions across the region, particularly regarding the balance between energy security requirements and decarbonisation objectives in Asia’s rapidly evolving energy landscape.
