The State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) will further increase the storage capacity for crude oil and finished products at its STAR Refinery in Aliaga, western Turkey.

The new STAR Refinery Crude Oil and Oil Products Tanks Project will see new tanks built at the site with a capacity of 342,000 m3, which are scheduled to be completed in 2021. The STAR Refinery is Turkey’s largest oil refinery with a capacity of 10 million TPA. It began operations in October 2018.

Once the new expansion project is completed, the STAR Refinery will have a total storage capacity of 2.5 million m3. The tank terminal is already the largest in the Aegean region.

SOCAR made the formal announcement at an inauguration ceremony of 12 newly-completed tanks with a storage capacity of 335,000 m3 at the refinery.

The company then also carried out a groundbreaking ceremony for the new expansion project. Rovnag Abdullayev, President of SOCAR, said that the increased storage capacity will improve productivity, commercial flexibility and production safety at the refinery: “Last year we were here for the inauguration ceremony of the STAR Refinery. We are happy to be back in Aliaga for our new projects within a year.

“Our petrochemical investments constitute an important pillar of our operations, creating a long-term income source by bringing added value to the Azerbaijan economy, as well as making a big contribution to the region and Turkey.”
