ADIPEC 2024 launched in Abu Dhabi with an inspiring call for accelerated innovation and collaboration to advance global energy transformation. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE minister of industry and advanced technology and ADNOC Group CEO, opened the event with a message rallying the energy sector to drive sustainable socioeconomic growth. He underscored the importance of harnessing three key megatrends: the rise of emerging markets, energy system transformation, and the exponential growth of Artificial Intelligence, which he described as essential to meeting the needs of a growing global population.

The event, which runs from November 4-7, is expected to attract over 184,000 attendees, including 40 ministers and 200 C-suite executives. Throughout the day, discussions focused on pressing issues such as AI’s role in energy, investment in technology, and fostering international partnerships.

The first Ministerial Panel, titled “The New Global Leaders and the Energy Transition,” featured high-level officials from the UAE, India, Uganda, and Egypt, discussing policy’s role in shaping the energy future. Meanwhile, industry executives from companies like Shell, bp, PETRONAS, Eni, and ADNOC explored the challenge of meeting rising energy demand while moving toward a low-carbon future.

Wael Sawan, CEO of Shell, emphasised the need for diversified energy sources and strategic investment in decarbonising existing assets. Other industry leaders, like IPIECA CEO Brian Sullivan, advocated for leveraging the sector’s expertise in the transition to sustainable energy practices.

The event also introduced a Finance and Investment Conference, where leaders examined the capital gaps that hinder equitable transition. Discussions highlighted the need for financial collaboration to fund the infrastructure necessary for sustainable energy projects.

AI took centre stage with the launch of the AI Zone, showcasing its potential to transform energy systems and enhance investment opportunities. ADIPEC 2024, now in its 40th year, continues to serve as a vital platform for global collaboration, investment, and innovation in the energy sector’s journey towards a sustainable future.
