On November 23, the carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) test project at the Liaohe oil field in north-eastern China successfully passed the approval of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). The oil field is now speeding up the construction of a regional carbon storage service base and striving to create further underground storage.

CCUS is one of the key technologies in reducing carbon dioxide emissions by capturing and purifying the carbon dioxide emitted in production processes and re-injecting it into the ground. The implementation of the project will create a CCUS development model which will provide technical support and field experience for wider adoption of CCUS in China.

As of November 25, more than 3,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide had been injected into the first test well at the Liaohe oil field. As one of CNPC’s pilot schemes, the Liaohe CCUS project has established a complete production chain of carbon dioxide capture, purification, cooling, transportation and injection.

In order to expand the CCUS business, a special technical team has been created and efforts to develop new technology have been intensified. Liaohe oil field will expand the scale of CCUS tests in two oil field blocks starting from next year.

The Liaohe oil field’s CCUS project will eventually be able to provide a feasible solution for carbon emission reduction at petrochemical enterprises in the surrounding areas by using carbon trading policy.

According to a preliminary evaluation, the potential scale of the Liaohe oil field’s CCUS capacity is about 500 million tonnes, with the storage capacity of abandoned oil and gas reservoirs alone reaching more than 80 million tonnes.

By vigorously expanding its CCUS business, CNPC’s Liaohe oil field strives to achieve carbon dioxide carbon capture capacity of 400 thousand tonnes per year, carbon utilisation and storage scale of 1 million tonnes per year, and build a regional carbon storage service base during the “14th Five-year Plan” period.
