The UK Oil and Gas Authority revealed that hydrogen production at Bacton could supply enough low-carbon energy for London and South East England in a commissioned study.

It disclosed that hydrogen from the area could help to decarbonise up to 20 percent of the UK population, with potential to decarbonise domestic, commercial and industrial energy offtake sectors, as well as transportation.

Due to the intermittency of green hydrogen production, the study outlined the need for hydrogen storage for green hydrogen. Relatively, blue hydrogen production can be ramped up and down to match demand.

The report summarised that Bacton would be well-equipped for both large scale blue and green hydrogen production. According to data collected by ICIS, Bacton terminal is a key landing point for UK continental shelf gas production.
